Windows Vista only: Freeware Vista Media Center plug-in vmcNetFlix streams Netflix Watch Now videos to Windows Media Center extenders, including the Xbox 360. You can also manage your queue, browse movies, and do just about anything else you’d want from a Netflix plug-in. Previously mentioned MyNetflix incorporated all of these features, but so far it does not support streaming to extenders. If you’ve been tempted by the new Netflix streaming box but don’t want to throw down cash when you’ve already got a 360 in your home theater, vmcNetFlix is a sure winner. There will be no x64 version of SP3 released; Windows XP x64 will be updated at the same time Windows Server 2003 is updated, since it is derived from the codebase of the latter. Although Microsoft has still to confirm the date, SP3 should be rolled out via Automatic Updates on June 10, 2008.

The service pack contains all previously-released Windows XP updates, including security updates, out-of-band releases, and hotfixes released since Windows XP SP2 hit Microsoft’s servers back in August 2004. There are reportedly 1,073 fixes in SP3, as well as various performance improvements. Every service pack Microsoft releases is cumulative, meaning it is possible to install just SP3 on a clean install of XP (or slipstream it right into the original media). Windows Internet Explorer 7 is not included as part of SP3 and still must be downloaded and installed separately (unless it is already installed).

With SP3, Microsoft has back-ported four Vista features to XP, including Network Access Protection (NAP) in order “to help organizations that use Windows XP to take advantage of new features in the Windows Server 2008 operating system.” The four features that are no longer Vista-specific are as follows:

* NAP is a policy enforcement platform meant for enterprise use that blocks systems attempting to access a network until they meet whatever security criteria the corporation has in place.
* “Black Hole” Router Detection helps detect and protect end users from a router that drops packets without returning the specified Internet Control Message Protocol response.
* Microsoft Kernel Cryptographic Module incorporates cryptographic algorithms in a single module other kernel mode drivers are capable of hooking into and accessing.
* The new Product Activation module allows users to install XP without entering a product key at installation.

Just over a month after the release of Vista SP1, XP SP3 hit RTM on April 21, 2008, as the rumors predicted. Up until then, Microsoft continued to stubbornly say that SP3 would go final in the “first half of 2008.” The last beta build Microsoft released to the public was XP SP3 RC2 Refresh, available in English, German, and Japanese.

MSDN and TechNet subscribers received the final English 544.86MB ISO image a few days ago. As with Vista SP1, however, subscribers had to fight to get the final build before it hit RTW. MSDN and TechNet subscribers were supposed to get SP3 on May 2, 2008, or three days after it was available publicly.

With the release of SP3, XP will be found on consumers’ PCs for years and years to come. On the other hand, with Windows 7 a couple of years out, and with the recent broad release of Vista SP1, Windows XP’s life as market leader is slowly coming to an end.

The keyword here is “slowly.” Microsoft has extended the life of XP Home until at least June 2010 for budget laptops, and even Apple is supporting XP SP3. Furthermore, although Microsoft has plans to stop selling XP to most manufacturers and system builders on June 30, 2008, OEMs are fighting back.

Manufacturers have found a loophole to bypass the deadline: when purchasing a computer with Windows Vista Ultimate or Business editions, Microsoft has given consumers the option to downgrade to XP Professional. Companies such as Dell and Lenovo are using Microsoft’s “Downgrade Rights” to offer XP Professional for as long as possible. Microsoft is unlikely to be worried since consumers still have to purchase Vista and always have the option to upgrade to the company’s flagship OS whenever they choose to.

Although Vista SP1 was a very critical release for the software giant, XP SP3 is still extremely important. The company is quite aware that many businesses have made the decision to stay with XP and has more than once extended support for the now six-year-old operating system. The company will of course continue to release updates, but it is not clear whether there will be an SP4.

What originally looked like it was going to be a less complicated release than Vista SP1 has turned into a maelstrom of confusion for end-users. It’s time to set the record straight: Windows XP SP3 is available for download from Microsoft, but it has not officially hit the Release to Web (RTW) milestone as was originally planned for today.

The delay only recently became evident when Microsoft spokesperson posted the following message on Microsoft TechNet: “In the last few days, we have uncovered a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and both Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience, we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to the web.”

Having said that, if you are not running Microsoft Dynamics RMS, it is perfectly safe to install XP SP3 or Vista SP1 (which has also been pulled from automatic updates).

You know, every time we look at that headline, we have to remind ourselves that this isn’t an article from The Onion. But seriously, it appears that Microsoft founder Bill Gates has decided to stop using Facebook, a site his company recently spend $240 million to buy a 1.6% stake in.

The reason? Because Gates was getting 8,000 friend requests a day and spending 30 minutes every day on the site. But come on, it’s not like the guy has anything else to do now that he’s stepping down as CEO, right?

The Sun initially broke the news, saying that Gates had deleted his account. But we all know how difficult it is to actually delete a Facebook account. Fortunately, the Wall Street Journal did a bit of investigative work and discovered that Gates has simply decided to stop using his account. So there’s hope that one day he will return and kick your ass at Scrabulous.

1. Princess Juliana International Airport (Saint Martin)

Princess Juliana International Airport serves Saint Maarten, the Dutch part of the island of Saint Martin. It is the second busiest airport in the Eastern Caribbean. The airport is famous for its short landing strip — only 2,180 metres/7,152 ft, which is barely enough for heavy jets. Because of this, the planes approach the island flying extremely low, right over Maho Beach. Countless photos of large jets flying at 10–20 m/30-60 ft over relaxing tourists at the beach have been dismissed as fakes many times, but are nevertheless real. For this reason as well it has become a favourite for planespotters. Despite the difficulties in approach, there has been no records of major aviation incidents at the airport.

2. Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport (Saba)

Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport is the only airport on the Caribbean island of Saba, in the Netherlands Antilles. It is well known among experienced fliers for the way in which airplanes must approach or take off from the airport.Yrausquin Airport covers a relatively large portion of the small island of Saba. Some aviation experts are of the general opinion that the airport is one of the most dangerous in the world, despite the fact that no major tragedies have happened at the facility. The airport’s sole runway is marked with an X at each end, to indicate to commercial pilots that the airport is closed for commercial aviation.The danger arises from the airport’s physical position. It’s so short that you have to land on an inclined strip to slow down and take off on a decline to pick up enough speed.Who gets to land here? Well, Pierce Brosnan made the short list. This was the airport used in the opening seen of Tomorrow Never Dies. For the rest of us, private plane, helicopter, or charter are the only ways to go, and your pilot is going to need some serious training before he or she is allowed to land at CVF.

4. Gustaf III Airport (St. Bart)

Gustaf III Airport also known as Saint Barthélemy Airport is a public use airport located in the village of St. Jean on the Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy. Both the airport and the island’s main town of Gustavia are named for King Gustav III of Sweden, under whom Sweden obtained the island from France in 1785 (it was sold back to France in 1878). The airport is served by small regional commercial aircraft and charters. Most visiting aircraft carry fewer than twenty passengers, such as the Twin Otter, a common sight around Saint Barth and throughout the northern West Indies. The short airstrip is at the base of a gentle slope ending directly on the beach. The arrival descent is extremely steep over the hilltop traffic circle and departing planes fly right over the heads of sunbathers (although small signs advise sunbathers not to lie directly at the end of the runway).

Barra Airport is the only airport in the world where planes land on the beach. BRR is situated in on the wide beach of Traigh Mhor, on Barra island, in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. If you want to fly here commercially you will want to book with British Airways, which flies to Barra from Glasgow and Benbecula.The airport is literally washed away by the tide once a day, and if you arrive on a late afternoon flight, you may notice a couple of cars in the parking lot with their lights on, which provides pilots some added visibility, since the airport is naturally lit. Needless to say you probably don’t want to hang out at Barra Airport beach, unless you are a aviation junkie, in which case Barra Airport has a fool proof system, as sign that reads: “Keep off the beach. When the windsock is flying and the airport is active.”

6. Madeira Airport (Madeira)

Madeira Airport also known as Funchal Airport and Santa Catarina Airport, is an international airport located near Funchal, Madeira. The airport controls national and international air traffic of the island of Madeira.The airport was once infamous for its short runway which, surrounded by high mountains and the ocean, made it a tricky landing for even the most experienced of pilots. The original runway was only 1,400 metres in length, but was extended by 400 metres after the TAP Air Portugal Flight 425 incident of 1977 and subsequently rebuilt in 2003, almost doubling the size of the runway, building it out over the ocean. Instead of using landfill, the extension was built on a series of 180 columns, each being about 70m tall.For the enlargement of the new runway the Funchal Airport has won the Outstanding Structures Award, given by International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). The Outstanding Structures Award is considered to be the “Oscar” for engineering structures in Portugal.

In January 2008, the government of Nepal announced that the airport would be renamed in honor of Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest, who passed away on January 11, 2008. The airport is quite popular as Lukla is the place where most people start their trek to climb Mount Everest.

1. A 10-Pound Hairball (unidentified 18-year-old woman - New England, USA)

The New England Journal of Medicine reported on November 2007 how doctors took a 10-pound hairball from an 18-year-old woman after she came to them with pain and a 40-pound weight loss. The woman had been suffering with pain in her abdomen for about five months.

Doctors found a mass there, and when they used a small camera, found that the hairball was taking up nearly her entire stomach. The patient said that she has a habit of eating her own hair, a condition called trichophagia. Doctors tried to use small incisions to remove the mass, but then had to go to traditional surgery to make sure the entire hairball was removed.

The journal’s report said the girl left the hospital after five days and was asked to follow up with a psychiatrist. Within a year, she had regained about half of the weight she lost and said she had stopped eating her hair.

Yang Dingcai, in southeast China says 40 years of swallowing tree frogs and rats live has helped him avoid intestinal complaints and made him strong. Jiang Musheng, a 66-year-old resident of Jiangxi province, suffered from frequent abdominal pains and coughing from the age of 26, until an old man called Yang Dingcai suggested tree frogs as a remedy, the Beijing News said on Tuesday.”At first, Jiang Musheng did not dare to eat a live, wriggling frog, but after seeing Yang Dingcai swallow one, he ate … two without a thought,” the paper said. “After a month of eating live frogs, his stomach pains and coughing were completely gone.”Over the years Jiang had added live mice, baby rats and green frogs to his diet, and had once eaten 20 mice in a single day, the paper said.

3. 20 cobblestones (unidentified young woman - China)

On 2006, a girl from Foshan, China, swallowed down more than 20 cobblestones in a moment of anger after a big quarrel with her boyfriend. Initially, she thought the stones would be flushed out after clearing her bowels, but unfortunately they remained intact within her body for the next few days.To make matters worse, she constantly felt that the stones were knocking against each other within her stomach which caused some pain and discomfort. After visiting the hospital and taking an X-ray, she was advised to undergo surgery to remove the stones. Shocked and not knowing what to do, she tried seeking for help at a local hospital’s online forum. As further complications may occur if she delays her medical treatment, doctors have advised her to undergo treatment as soon as possible, with the first attempts through the non-painful gastroscope for extracting stones.

Michel Lotito (born 1950) is a French entertainer, famous as the consumer of undigestables, and is known as Monsieur Mangetout (Mister Eat-it-all). Lotito’s performances are the consumption of metal, glass, rubber and so on in items such as bicycles, televisions, a Cessna 150, and smaller items which are disassembled, cut-up and swallowed. The aircraft took roughly two years to be ‘eaten’ from 1978 to 1980. He began eating unusual material while a child and has been performing publicly since 1966. Lotito does not often suffer from ill-effects due to his diet, even after the consumption of materials usually considered poisonous. When performing he consumes around a kilogram of material daily, preceding it with mineral oil and drinking considerable quantities of water during the ‘meal’. He apparently possesses a stomach and intestine with walls of twice the expected thickness, and his digestive acids are, allegedly, unusually powerful, allowing him to digest a certain portion of his metallic meals. According to the interview, Jamie Lynn confirmed the pregnancy through a home test. She later paid a visit to the doctor, who corroborated the news. She said she revealed the news to her parents shortly before Thanksgiving.

Jamie Lynn said that her mother, Lynne Spears, “was very upset because it wasn’t what she expected at all. A week after, she had time to cope with it and became very supportive.” Lynne Spears also commented on the news, saying, “I didn’t believe it because Jamie Lynn’s always been so conscientious. She’s never late for her curfew. I was in shock. I mean, this is my 16-year-old baby.”

Jamie Lynn, a high school junior, reportedly plans to raise the baby in Louisiana, her home state, “so it can have a normal family life.” In regards to the third season of her Nickelodeon show, “Zoey 101,” which wraps January 4, Jamie Lynn said: “I haven’t spoken to [Nickelodeon] personally, but they have always been so great to me over the past years and have given me so many opportunities.” The show is slated to start back up again in February, and fourth-season filming is already done.

1. Frane Selak

Escaped from a derailed train, a door-less plane, a bus crash, a car into flames, another 2 car accidents… but then won $1,000,000 dollars on the lottery!

Frane Selak (born 1929) is a Croatian music teacher famous for his numerous escapes from fatal accidents:

In January, 1962, Selak was traveling via train from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik. However, the train had suddenly derailed and plunged into an icy river, killing 17 passengers. Selak managed to escape, and only suffered a broken arm and minor scrapes and bruises.

The following year, while traveling from Zagreb to Rijeka when the door blew away from the cockpit, forcing him out of the plane. Although 19 others were killed, he suffered only minor injuries and had miraculously landed in a haystack.

In 1966, he was riding on a bus that crashed and plunged into a river. Four others were killed, but Selak managed to escape unharmed.

In 1970, he managed to escape before a faulty fuel pump engulfed his car into flames.

In 1973, another of Selak’s cars caught fire, forcing fire through the air vents. He suffered no injuries save the loss of most of his hair.

In 1995, he was hit by a city bus, but once again suffered minor injuries.

In 1996 he escaped when he drove off a cliff to escape an oncoming truck. He managed to land in a tree, and watched as his car exploded 300 feet below him.

In 2003 he won $1,000,000 dollars in the Croatian lottery, and had stated that “I know God was watching me over all these years.” He has reputedly refused to fly to Australia to air on a Doritos commercial, saying he “didn’t want to test his luck.”[2]He has said that he can either be looked as “the world’s unluckiest man, or the world’s luckiest man,” and prefers the latter.

2. John Lyne
Suffered 16 major accidents in his life. As a teen, he felt from a tree; on his way back from hospital, his bus crashed.

John Lyne could well be Britain’s unluckiest man. ‘Calamity John’ has suffered 16 major accidents in his life, including lightning strikes, a rock-fall in a mine and three car crashes. ‘I don’t think there is any reason or explanation. Things could have been much worse and I could have died but it doesn’t worry me too much.’

Mr Lyne’s mishaps cover a lifetime and he has even been known to suffer two accidents at once. As a child, he fell off a horse and cart – only to be run over by a delivery van. When he was a teenager, he broke his arm falling from a tree. On his way back from hospital, his bus crashed, breaking the same arm in another place. The date, of course, was Friday the 13th.

3. William “Bud” Post
won the lottery, but got sued by everyone and finally went broke and died

William “Bud” Post won $16.2 million in the Pennsylvania lottery in 1988 but now lives on his Social Security. “I wish it never happened. It was totally a nightmare,” says Post.

A former girlfriend successfully sued him for a share of his winnings. It wasn’t his only lawsuit. A brother was arrested for hiring a hit man to kill him, hoping to inherit a share of the winnings. Other siblings pestered him until he agreed to invest in a car business and a restaurant in Sarasota, Fla., - two ventures that brought no money back and further strained his relationship with his siblings. Post even spent time in jail for firing a gun over the head of a bill collector. Within a year, he was $1 million in debt.

Post admitted he was both careless and foolish, trying to please his family. He eventually declared bankruptcy. Now he lives quietly on $450 a month and food stamps. “I’m tired, I’m over 65 years old, and I just had a serious operation for a heart aneurysm. Lotteries don’t mean (anything) to me,” said Post. He died on Jan 15 of respiratory failure.

4. Major Summerford
Struck by lightning… 4 times!

A British officer, Major Summerford, while fighting in the fields of Flanders in February 1918 was knocked off his horse by a flash of lightning and paralyzed from the waist down. Summerford retired and moved to Vancouver. One day in 1924, as he fished alongside a river, lightning hit the tree he was sitting under and paralyzed his right side. Two years later Summerford was sufficiently recovered that he was able to take walks in a local park. He was walking there one summer day in 1930 when a lightning bolt smashed into him, permanently paralyzing him. He died two years later. But lightning sought him out one last time. Four years later, during a storm, lightning struck a cemetery and destroyed a tombstone. The deceased buried here? Major Summerford.

5. Henry Ziegland
Killed by a very persistent bullet

Henry Ziegland thought he had dodged fate. In 1883, he broke off a relationship with his girlfriend who, out of distress, committed suicide. The girl’s brother was so enraged that he hunted down Ziegland and shot him. The brother, believing he had killed Ziegland, then turned his gun on himself and took his own life. But Ziegland had not been killed. The bullet, in fact, had only grazed his face and then lodged in a tree. Ziegland surely thought himself a lucky man. Some years later, however, Ziegland decided to cut down the large tree, which still had the bullet in it. The task seemed so formidable that he decided to blow it up with a few sticks of dynamite. The explosion propelled the bullet into Ziegland’s head, killing him.

6. Ann Hodges
The only person (on record) to have been hit by a Meteorite

Ann Elizabeth Hodges (1923 - 1972) of Sylacauga, Alabama is the only person of record to have been hit by a meteorite. On November 30, 1954, she was napping on her living room couch when a grapefruit-sized meteoroid crashed through the roof of her house. It bounced off her large wooden console radio, destroying it, and struck her on the arm and hip. She was badly bruised but able to walk.As it streaked through the atmosphere, the meteor made a fireball visible from three states, even though it fell early in the afternoon. As the first documented case of an extraterrestrial object hitting a person, the event received worldwide publicity. The United States Air Force sent a helicopter to take the meteorite. Hodges’ husband, Eugene, hired a lawyer to get it back. The Hodgeses’ landlord also claimed it, wanting to sell it to cover the damage to the house. There were offers of up to 5,000 U.S. dollars for the meteorite. By the time the meteorite was returned to the Hodgeses, over a year later, public attention had diminished and they were unable to find a buyer willing to pay much money.Ms. Hodges was uncomfortable with the public attention and the stress of the dispute over ownership of the meteorite. Against her husband’s wishes, she donated it to the Alabama Museum of Natural History. It is an ordinary chondrite stone (H4), and weighs about 8.5 pounds (4 kg). It is on display at the University of Alabama.

7. Evelyn Adams
Won the lottery twice, now lives on a trailer

“Winning the lottery isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be,” says Evelyn Adams, who won the New Jersey lottery not just once, but twice (1985, 1986), to the tune of $5.4 million. Today the money is all gone and Adams lives in a trailer. “I won the American dream but I lost it, too. It was a very hard fall. It’s called rock bottom,” says Adams.

“Everybody wanted my money. Everybody had their hand out. I never learned one simple word in the English language - ‘No.’ I wish I had the chance to do it all over again. I’d be much smarter about it now,” says Adams, who also lost money at the slot machines in Atlantic City. “I was a big-time gambler,” admits Adams. “I didn’t drop a million dollars, but it was a lot of money. I made mistakes, some I regret, some I don’t. I’m human. I can’t go back now so I just go forward, one step at a time.”

It comes as the main searches end for the discs lost after being sent from the HMRC office in Newcastle to the National Audit Office in London.

Police say they are now extending the searches to “rule out” other locations.

Meanwhile, Acting HMRC boss David Hartnett told MPs recent data incidents “may well” indicate systemic failure.

He revealed to the Treasury sub-committee that seven incidents of “some significance” had been recorded over the past two-and-a-half years.

Mr Hartnett added that the HMRC’s IT partner had lost a disc containing banking information in 2006 which had later been found.

He added that the morale of HMRC staff was now “very low indeed”, but workers were “determined to learn from this”.

Police looking for the two data discs currently missing are appealing to HMRC, NAO and Treasury staff to check.

The unencrypted CDs, containing the entire child benefit database, were posted from HMRC offices in October, but never arrived at the NAO.

The prime minister and chancellor have apologised and an inquiry is under way, alongside the police investigation.

Millions of families have been told to look out for fraudulent use of their details, which include children’s names, addresses, dates of birth and National Insurance and bank details.

The HMRC sent letters last week to the seven million households whose records were on the discs, in which it said it expected the CDs were still on government property.

Rubbish tip

But the update from the Metropolitan Police, leading the search, does not go so far, although it does say “to date there is no evidence that the lost data has ended up in criminal possession”.

The statement also reveals that the core team hunting the discs has been cut from 47 to 32.

It sets out day-by-day the searches that have taken place of offices and computers and even a rubbish tip.

The update on the progress of the search came as it was reported in the Daily Telegraph that the identities of up to 350 of people in witness protection programmes were contained on the CDs.
